Olde Tyme Radio-e

Hey gang,

I was interviewed last week by the Groovy Gamers Groovecast. It's a podcast dedicated to play-by-email and play-by-post games, and we talked about the Winter Court. It was a fun interview and hopefully it will bring more role-players to Rokugan. You can check it out at groovygamers.com. It's Episode 12.

So what else is going on? Khan's Defiance previews! Previews is always a fun time. I love to get up and read all the posts, and even to see how many showed up since i went to sleep. I have to say I'm honestly excited about Samurai Edition and the changes we've made. The rules are a lot more intuitive, and that's coming from someone who has played since Imperial. We're finally doing away with the old "foo-rule". Ogre Bushi wouldn't be an ogre or a bushi unless "Ogre * Bushi" are in his trait area. And having "Ogre Bushi" in the trait area doesn't make him an Ogre or a Bushi, but an "Ogre Bushi" card. Every bold item separated by bullet points or line breaks is its own single trait, even if it has multiple words. It's a lot easier to grasp and a lot better to only have to look to one area for traits.

But that's just one change. Wait until you see about actions in Open, Limited, or Battle. ;)

The Winter of Red Snow

Hi Everyone,

So it looks like winter has finally set in for Rokugan, and that means the Shogun is on the move. No doubt you've seen the Khan's Defiance preview trailer already. A few Cranes were complaining about Dragons whipping them around in most of the art in the preview. Bevan gets to pick and choose what art he wants to use out of a pool I provide, and he has no loyalties at all. So it was luck of the draw. Anyway, just to show you that things aren't all gold and green all the time, here's a little preview of another card in the set.

So Brussels was an amazing event, as we've talked about in other places. I rarely update this thing so since we've talked about it on forums and such so much already I'm not going to retype it all again, except to say thank you to everyone who attended.

AND for those of you who felt you didn't get enough notice about the event, we're already working on 2007 Worlds which will of course be at GenCon Indy this time, and the location of the 2008 championships will be announced at GenCon Indy 2007, so you should have ample time to make your plans. Yes, I listened!

Finally, the Creatures book got bumped back a little bit due to proofs from the printer or something like that (don't have the whole story from Ken suffice to say we couldn't help it). It shouldn't be TOO long though, I was told December definitely. Before Christmas. And Art of the Duel is right on schedule (believe it or not).

Hopefully I'll be back here before months pass again.

Off to Belgium

About to head overseas to the L5R World Championships. We had over 250 people pre-register, and we expect the total number of players who show up to top 400. Should be a great event. Of course we're running this one all ourselves, so it should be an interesting experience. You'd be surprised just how much work the infrastructure of a major event like this. Food, tables, power, etc. all takes a lot of work. GenCon and Origins take of most of that for us at the other shows. Flying solo on this one! Still it's gonna be great. I demand that if you are there you come and say hi. Can't promise I'll remember your name five minutes later, but I do want to meet you!

So the other big deal about going overseas like this is all the things you have to wrap up before you go. We've got a lot in the pipeline right now, including layout of new RPG books, development on the CCG expansions, cool new stuff like special Clan binders (watch the online store in a few months), and tons of other surprises you'll have coming in 2007.

Oh, and one last thing, if you're going to be at Worlds, bring some extra Euros. Drew Baker and Steve Argyle will be there selling prints and art, House Atreides from the UK will be there selling singles, and we'll have tons of product, including Rise of the Shogun and a lot of honor counters and ivory strongholds courtesy of Flying Tricycle. And the all new Clan shirts will be there but featuring a special World Championships logo just for those who are lucky enough to buy them there!

See you in Brussels!

Just To See If You're Paying Attention

I so rarely get to post here anymore, I thought I'd post up some Khan's Defiance preview art and see if the L5R players even find it. And yes, it's Benika from the Origins storyline event.

Anyway, just got back from the ACD and Alliance East distributor open houses. Samurai Edition, the board game, and the graphic novel all got a lot of excitement, and several stores are planning on picking up L5R and Warlord, so some of you who haven't had a store in a while might find one soon. Both shows were really enjoyable, and I'd like to thank all the people at ACD and Alliance for being great hosts. Special kudos to Mike Webb on his great cookout. I'll have to tell you all sometimes about the days when we played Star Wars RPG (West End d6 system) together. I could go on about that for pages though, so I probably shouldn't start. I will recommend however if you are at Origins to check out Mike's awesome Star Wars scenarios in the miniatures room.

Moving On...

Well, as most of you now know, Mike Leader has assumed the role of Brand Manager for Warlord. I couldn't be more happy leaving it in his more than capable hands. I look forward to seeing the new directions Mike takes the game.

And that of course moves me fully into L5R territory. I have lots of plans for the game, many of which you've already heard about including the board game and graphic novel coming next year. I'll try to post here again more often, though it will have a much more samurai feel...

So if any L5R players happen by, and would like to see my thoughts on a few subjects, leave a comment or two. I'll see what I can do about writing them up. First though should be a little behind the scenes on the World Championships and what we have planned.
